University of Rochester
Rochester, New York
Private University
University of Rochester is a stunningly beautiful campus in Rochester, New York. As a matter of fact, it was designed by the same architect who designed John’s Hopkins and Columbia Universities. Meliora is the motto: Ever Better.
University of Rochester’s graduation requirements include one required writing course, and then courses in a student’s chosen major and two cluster requirements. The clusters offer students the ability to choose among many sets of three related courses or design their own. URochester students are able to fine tune their major to individualize their academic study….but within a structure and with the assistance of involved advisors. I recall them mentioned, “an open curriculum…. with guardrails.”
URochester students have 200+ majors to choose from and study business, engineering, music, and a myriad of other disciplines. University of Rochester is home to the Eastman School of Music where faculty and staff are dedicated to artistry, scholarship, leadership and community. Eastman’s Sibley Music Library is the largest music library in North America. Nine hundred concerts are performed each year, and eight hundred of them are free!
Tips… University of Rochester strongly recommends applicants go through an interview., and these can be done virtually. This helps the applicant get to know URochester as well as allowing the admission representative to meet the applicant. What are you interested in? What makes you interesting? When asked to describe a URochester student, the admissions representative I spoke to said, “An intellectual tinkerer.”
